I usually default to a more common coordinates system (usually X-axis and Y*60°), but where the initial prompt was for exactly 36 hexes and I was building a locked-off location, I suddenly realised that there was a simple way to key each hex with a single symbol!
For something on a larger scale, I don’t think it’s better, but I’m leaning towards using it for dungeon rooms too

How did you arrive at this particular approach to labelling the hex keys?

I have a backburnered project that this approach would be ideal for.
If I ever get round to revisiting it, I'm going to do it this way.
